Dear all,
Since the recent change in advice from the government, we have been assessing the possibility of starting water training, in small socially isolated groups. After several conversations with schools, clubs and other relevant parties, we have decided (given the guidelines issues by British rowing) that now is not the right time for us to be restarting any water training sessions. We are hoping that in the near future we will be able to provide water training sessions for small groups of experienced 6th form scullers, with the potential to open that invitation to other year groups, when appropriate guidance changes.
The Current guidance from British rowing states:
'At this stage, we do not recommend organised coaching sessions, however, it may be possible to organise 1:1 coaching in certain circumstances. Ultimately, we advise clubs to err on the side of caution and follow both the spirit and letter of any Government guidance.'
Our interpretation of this advice, along with many other schools and clubs, is that we should not be holding group sculling sessions at this stage, and for several reasons we are reluctant to implement 1 on 1 coaching.
We are aware that a small proportion of clubs have been able to circumnavigate the guidelines, but we do not feel that the options we have discussed for our boat club, allow us to do this at this stage, while following the 'spirit and letter of goverment guidance.'
We are aware that this is frustrating for many rowers who are likely desperate to get out on the water, particularly given the current weather. Please remind the rowers to be patient, hopefully, as the situation improves we will have more freedom and water sessions can resume. Keep up the good land training!
Thank you.
Mr Murison
