Dear All
Thank you to all those that came to the Swans meeting last Monday.
The meeting was mainly about fundraising; future events and other ways to make money for the Club.
For those of you who are new to rowing at GMS - we have 3 main events each academic year:
The Here W'Ergo Night, this year on Friday 29th March in the School Hall. This is a fun packed evening where rowers/parents/friends race in teams against each other. Fish and chip supper and licensed bar. There is also a raffle and silent auction.
The Inter House Regatta held at Longridge, this year on Saturday 13th July. This is a fun regatta for all year groups but mainly for the Year 7s/Novice rowers to showcase their newly learned skills to family and friends - the more the merrier! The students are put into their houses and compete against each other. We also offer a BBQ and licensed bar.
The Awards Dinner on Tuesday 17th July venue to be confirmed. For the last 5 years this has been held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Marlow but we're changing the venue this year - more to follow! This is a formal occasion with a 2 course sit down meal, where the rowers get a chance to dress up! We get a chance to showcase the achievements of our rowers and various rowing awards are given out.
We also hold a Grand Draw in the summer - last year this raised in the region of £4000.
But to run any of these, we need volunteers to take on various aspects. We need:
1. Helpers at Here W'Ergo behind the scenes; on the night and before the event. We do need someone or a body of people to take on the raffle/silent auction.
2. Someone to take ownership of the Inter House Regatta.
3. Help needed with the Awards Dinner, before the event and on the night.
4. The Grand Draw - someone to take ownership for this.
As Mr Murison explained at the meeting we need £90,000 to keep the club afloat (sorry for the pun!) each year and that's without buying new boats and equipment. The annual membership covers some of this but there's still a significant deficit. Any new ideas or initiatives are always welcome!
If anyone would like to offer their help and time or feels they could take any of this on, then please get in touch with me.
Thank you for reading and sorry it's a long post!
Caroline
